Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2013 Islay Scotch Whiskey is made from Britain's oldest continuously cultivated cereal. Bere Barley was once a staple for Scotland's distillers, but it fell out of fashion when more modern varieties were selected for yield, not flavor. Bruichladdich, however, led by their unrelenting curiosity, has been working since 2005 to reintroduce Bere alongside the University of the Highlands and Island's Agronomy Institute. This resurrection story is a triumph for the remote Islands ecosystem built around this grain in Orkney, and it's also a triumph for flavor seekers. This whisky is matured in Bruichladdich's classic house style of ex-bourbon and ex-wine casks, which brings out the delicious, buttery texture of Bere and makes it unmistakably unique.
